What is the Cambodian Water Festival? Cambodian water festival is one of the most exorbitant national Khmer festivals that is held each time a year. Normally, Royal government of Cambodia is usually do it in November for three days from 5th, 6th to 7th every year if the date is changed just only 1 or 2 day different. By local people are called this ceremony as Bon Oum Touk Ork Orm Bork Sam Peh Preh Ke ( Water Festival and Moon ceremony) and celebrated when the moon is full.
We do this festival for thanksgiving to Mekong river and Tonly Sap river which are provided the natural resources such as fishes and fertile land for farming in the whole Country. By Khmer history, water festival is celebrated for Khmer army who always train army for fighting in the battle between other countries around. As an example, we can see many kind of arts in Angkor Wat temple, Bayon temple and other temples in Siem Reap province.
Nowadays, when the water festival comes, we always see most of local people and foreigners come to Phnom Penh city to join this ceremony. In the these days, we can see hundreds of racing boat that is racing in Mekong river in front of Royal Palace. All TV channels are shown only this event and people join national games together. It is the best ceremony that differents from other national ones because others ceremonies the people go to province such as Khmer New year, Pjoum ben day and so on. But in the water festival people come to Phnom Penh city. We can happy together from the day time until 12:00Pm.
